Abstract

Purpose : The purpose of this correlational survey is to investigate junior nursing officers` confidence and performance frequency of core basic nursing skills and their clinical competency.

Methods : The data were collected from 208 junior nursing officers with structured questionnaires between April 12 and May 8. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson`s correlation coefficient using SPSS.

Results : Confidence and performance frequency of core basic nursing skills and clinical competency of the participants were 4.16¡¾.69, 2.56¡¾.57, and 4.32¡¾.44 respectively. There was a significant difference in performance frequency of core basic nursing skills depending on years since commission and place of work. And there was a significant difference in clinical competency depending on specialty. There were statistically positive correlations among junior officers` confidence and performance frequency of core basic nursing skills and clinical competency.

Conclusion : The study results suggest that it is necessary to develop stepwise education strategies for clinical practice including core basic nursing skills in consideration of place of work and roles of junior nursing officers.
